Sight 6: Sant Joan Baptista
The Hermitage of Sant Joan de Blanes is a church in the municipality of Blanes (Selva). It is located on top of the hill of the same name next to the castle of Sant Joan, of which it was the chapel but due to lack of space it had to be located outside the enclosure. Mass is said for Sant Joan. It is documented as early as the thirteenth century and in 1377 it is recorded that there was a priest in the castle who took care of it. During the seventeenth century it was a center of pilgrimage for the day of St. John the Baptist. In 1959 a restoration was carried out in which the roof was redone and the Blanes artist Maria Teresa Bedós painted the frescoes inside. In 1991 it was restored again with the rehabilitation of the castle. It is a work included in the Inventory of the Architectural Heritage of Catalonia.
