It was put into service as a cargo passenger ship on the San Francisco route in 1898 (Meiji 31). In 1904 (Meiji 37), it was requisitioned by the Navy and participated in the Russo-Japanese War as a kind of specially built cruiser equipped with two 75mm guns. In the Russo-Japanese War, 11 costumed cruisers, including the Japan Maru, participated in the war, but there were many missions such as patrols and there were no casualties. Colonel Ryokichi Kajikawa: 18 January 1904 – 14 June 1905, Colonel Narukawa Ryokichi: 14 June – 4 November 1905. Japan Maru (Yamashita Kisen) --Tanker completed in June 1936 (Showa 11) at Kawasaki shipyard. On January 14, 1944, it was torpedoed by an American submarine and sank.
