The church of Santa Maria di Castello can be considered a symbol of Alessandria's urban history; it is indicated, in fact, as the oldest place in the city in the absence of the religious center par excellence: the ancient cathedral of St. Peter of the twelfth century demolished on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803. The church is located in the square of the same name and together they form the heart of Borgo Rovereto, an ancient district of the historic center of Alessandria. Castrum Roboreti, or more simply Roboretum, as the ancient Latin names were, already curtis regia in the eighth century, was one of the eight settlements that contributed to the foundation of the city of Alexandria in the second half of the twelfth century.
