St. Nicholas Church is the main church of the Joensuu Orthodox parish. It was completed in 1887. The church is located in the centre of Joensuu at the northern end of Kirkkokatu. The church is surrounded by the Park of the Cross. The church can be considered a landmark piece of Orthodox wooden church architecture from the 1800s, with its decorations and details. The most valuable part of the church, designed by G. I. Karpov, is probably the iconostasis, painted in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg. The six bells of the church are original. They are cast in St. Petersburg. The 120th anniversary of the Church was celebrated from September 22 to 23, 2007.
