It is located on Schwarzenbergplatz and was put into operation on 24 October 1873 in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I on the occasion of the completion of the first Viennese high-spring water pipeline after a construction period of four months. Prince Johann Adolf II zu Schwarzenberg had approved the construction of the well in September 1872 and requested that the "drain of the water quantum" should serve "for the irrigation of the existing facilities dedicated to public pleasure".
