Jaime Constantino de Freitas Moniz, known above all as Jaime Moniz was a Portuguese pedagogue, teacher, jurist and politician who distinguished himself in the study of Education and in the implementation of new pedagogies and teaching methods in the country. Introducer of pedagogy as a science in Portugal, he reformed secondary education in 1885, a trend known as The Reform of Jaime Moniz, influencing the development of the entire national education system until the mid-1930s. He was a professor at the University of Lisbon, deputy in the Chamber of Deputies, Minister of the Navy and Overseas, president of the Superior Council of Public Instruction and secretary of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon.
2. Sé do Funchal
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Sé, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Funchal, which encompasses all of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The late fifteenth-century cathedral is one of the few structures that survives virtually intact since the early period of colonization of Madeira. The patron of the cathedral is Our Lady of the Assumption.
3. Quinta da Boa Vista
The Quinta da Boa Vista is a historic quinta ('estate') and orchid garden in the Santa Maria Maior parish of Funchal on the island of Madeira, overlooking the central and western parts of Funchal. It contains one of the last remaining walled stair terrace gardens of Funchal and continues to draw its water from the levada irrigation system. It was built some time during the late 18th and early 19th century, appearing on Trigo's 1910 Planta Roteiro Cidade do Funchal 1910 map for the first time.
4. Jardim Almirante Reis
The Campo Almirante Reis, also known as Campo Dom Carlos I, is a former football ground, which was located in the city of Funchal, on the island of Madeira, Portugal. The ground was located right in the heart of Funchal's city centre, on the Rua Dom Carlos I in the Socorro area of town. The pitch was bordered on its south touchline by the Atlantic Ocean, and on its northern touchline by a small embankment and the tree-lined street, Rua Dom Carlos I.
5. Madeira Toboggan
Carros de cesto do Monte, known as Monte Toboggan – means of transportation from Monte in Funchal, the capital of Portuguese island Madeira. It consists of carts that are wicker baskets mounted on skids, sometimes compared to toboggan. They are pushed by men called Carreiros. Currently, they are a tourist attraction.
6. Campo da Barca Garden
Jardim do Campo da Barca is a small Portuguese urban park, located in the city of Funchal, Madeira. The garden, with an area of 3,000 m², is divided into two sectors by Estrada Conde Carvalhal: the northern sector, consisting of Largo Conde Canavial; and the southern sector, called Plaza de Tenerife.
