It was placed in the central square of the city, then known as Domplatz, in 1740 as an ex voto of chamber councilor Johann Anton Deschan von Hansen. The monument belongs to the typology of plague columns, widespread in the Baroque era throughout the South German, Bohemian and Hungarian space.

The Art Museum of Timișoara is an art museum located in the Baroque Palace of Timișoara. The museum came into being after the detachment of the art section of the Banat Museum, which functioned for a while in a wing of the current building. The museum became an independent institution on January 1, 2006, the director being university professor Marcel Tolcea. With the completion of a good part of the restoration works of the palace and the exhibition space, the extended museum could be inaugurated on December 21.

One of the representative buildings of 18th-century Timișoara, the Baroque Palace today houses the city's National Museum of Art.
