Individual Sights in TivoliSight 1: Santuario di Ercole Vincitore
The sanctuary of Hercules Victor is one of the largest complexes of Roman architecture in the Republican era. It is part of the typology of the so-called Hellenistic sanctuaries, dating back to the II-I centuries BC and built on the wave of the great cultural influence exerted by Hellenistic culture after the final Roman conquest of Greece. Located in Tivoli, it is the largest of the Italic sanctuaries dedicated to Hercules and the second largest in the Mediterranean after that of Gades in Spain. It was built between the last decades of the second century BC and 82 BC. Further interventions took place, especially in the area of the theater, in the Augustan era. Suetonius recounts that here Augustus administered justice on numerous occasions, under the porticoes of the sanctuary.
Sight 2: Tempio della Tosse
The Temple of the Cough is a former Christian church of the tenth century, founded by reusing a circular building of the Roman era, located on the ancient Via Tiburtina in Tivoli. It is located near the Aniene, near the sanctuary of Hercules Victor and the lower portion of Villa d'Este, outside the gate called "del Colle". Near it there is also a paper mill, now abandoned, built on the structures of the temple of Hercules.
Sight 3: Cattedrale di San Lorenzo
Tivoli Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, in Tivoli, Lazio, Italy. It is the seat of the bishop of Tivoli.
Sight 4: Tempio della Sibilla
The Temple of the Sibyl is an ancient Roman temple located on the acropolis of Tivoli, near the famous temple of Vesta. Despite the attribution of the temple to the sibyl Albunea, the deity to whom it was dedicated is not well known.
Sight 5: Parco di Villa Gregoriana
Villa Gregoriana is a park in Tivoli, Italy, located at the foot of the city's ancient acropolis. It consists mainly of thick woodland with paths that lead to the small circular Roman Temple of Vesta, the caves of Neptune and the Sirens, which form part of a series of gorges and cascades, and to the Great Waterfall.
