Sight 1: Santuario di Ercole Vincitore

Show sight on map

The Sanctuary of Hercules Victor is one of the largest complexes of Roman architecture in the Republican era. It belongs to the typology of the so-called Hellenistic sanctuaries, dating back to the II-I centuries BC and built on the wave of the great cultural influence exerted by Hellenistic culture after the definitive Roman conquest of Greece. Located in Tivoli, it is the largest of the Italic sanctuaries dedicated to Hercules and the second largest in the Mediterranean after that of Gades in Spain. It was built between the last decades of the second century BC and 82 BC. Further interventions took place, especially in the area of the theatre, in the Augustan era. Suetonius tells us that Augustus administered justice here on numerous occasions, under the porticoes of the sanctuary.
