Sight 8: Arco Normanno
The Norman Arch of Mazara del Vallo is the last vestige of the Norman fortification works with which the city was equipped: the Castle and the Walls that enclosed the entire historic center. The Norman Arch was the gateway to the castle built by Roger I of Hauteville after the liberation of the city from Arab domination in 1072, and demolished in 1880 for the construction of a public garden, the current Villa Jolanda. The castle occupied the south-east corner of the city walls.
