Sight 7: Lynch's Castle

Lynch's Castle

Castle Linsigh is an excellent example of a medieval classical tower located on shops in Galway city. This castle gives us an insight into the architectural elegance of Galway in the late medieval. It is located at the Shop Street Gabhal and a small Gate Street and is hit on the heart of the Middle Ages. It is still the nicest example of the urban city house and is the oldest building in Ireland that is used on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we know very little about the history of the castle and never recorded who took it or to whom it was built. It is certain that a wealthy person of the O'Brien family is said to have been the residence of Thomas Lynch Fitz Ambrose, Mayor of Galway in 1654. Many minor changes and reforms of the building were made over the 500 years. The oldest part of all, at the road, is an excellent type of castle that dates back to 1500. At that time there was a smaller west wing. It was subsequently raised, this may have occurred in the seventeenth century, that it was as high as the tower with its side and new windows were installed.
