The Heidenwall in Oldenburg (Lower Saxony) was a ring wall facility that was created in the 11th century, whose wooden remains were preserved in the ground. The fortification near the Hunte probably served the control of a ford on the river, over which a trade route from the south or from Bremen to East Frisia led. The builders and the time of the system are not known. In terms of city, it is a possible predecessor of a castle that was 2.3 km further east from the position of today's Oldenburg Castle.
