Sight 5: Épanchoir

Show sight on map

The epanchoir is a hydraulic engineering in the Epiphany in Neuss, which is linked to the Upper and North Canal and should be used to regulate the water level in the channel that should connect the Rhine with Antwerp. Napoleon Bonaparte had it built in 1809. The chief engineer Aimable Hageau was responsible. The lock had four openings that were made of iron protectable charges. This made it possible to control the water drain. However, the building was not used as planned because the Netherlands became French in 1810 and thus also the Dutch seaports. The channel project was then not pursued. There was also a bathing establishment in the epanchoir, which belonged to the so -called "Gütchen" and was recommended by all Neuss doctors in 1848. In 1858 the Neuss Augustinians bought the caps and thus also the bathing establishment.
