The Old Synagogue on the site of today's Old Synagogue in Freiburg im Breisgau was built in 1869/70 and destroyed in the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938. During construction work for the redesign of the square in 2016, remnants of the building's foundation were discovered, uncovered and documented in several places before it was partially removed and backfilled in order to build over it with a symbolic water basin. The fountain, known as the Place of Remembrance, corresponds in size and location to the floor plan of the destroyed synagogue and was opened to the public in 2017. With regard to its design and use, the memorial fountain is still the subject of controversy today.
