Built in 1954 by the architect-designer Jean Prouvé (1901-1984), as an experimental personal family home, it was acquired by the city of Nancy in 1990, administered by the Musée des beaux-arts de Nancy since 2013, and open to visitors as a museum from June to September. The house and office of his 1947 workshops in Maxéville, reconstructed in the lower part of the building, are classified as historical monuments by a decree of 2 November 1987.
