Famous for its Cluniac inspiration and its Romanesque sculptures by Gislebertus, it is a highlight of Romanesque art in Burgundy. It is the seat of the Bishop of Autun. The Bishop of Autun set forth the construction of St. Lazarus Cathedral as a result of the large movement of pilgrims travelling to Vezelay as they progressed on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.

The Ursuline Tower, formerly the Prisoners' Tower or François I Tower, is a keep erected in the twelfth century in Autun, in the French department of Saône-et-Loire. Its function was to protect the old Château Riveau or Rivault. It is the main vestige of this castle dismantled around 1600, whose name derives from the Latin rivus. This name was also borne by the former lords, and was then kept in the name of the Quartier Rivault.
