Show sight on map

The prison of Dendermonde was opened in 1863, making it one of the older prisons in Belgium. Until the opening of the prison in Beveren-Waas, the prison in the centre of the city was the only one in the former judicial district of Dendermonde. The prison serves as both a detention centre and a penal house. There is room for 168 inmates, but the prison is overcrowded with 250 inmates placed on a regular basis, and is occasionally in the news due to escapes and strikes by the prison guards due to overcrowding and a lack of staff.
