The prison of Dendermonde was opened in 1863 and is therefore one of the older prisons in Belgium. Until the opening of the prison in Beveren-Waas, the prison in the center of the city was the only one in the former judicial district of Dendermonde. The prison serves both as a place of arrest and as a penal house. There is room for 168 inmates, but the prison is overcrowded with regularly 250 placed prisoners, and is occasionally in the news due to escapes and strikes by the prison guards due to overcrowding and a lack of staff.
