The museum was founded in 2015 and was born from the union between the Cantonal Art Museum and the art museum of the city of Lugano. The museum collaborates with the Giancarlo and Danna Olgiati collection and is part of the "Art Museums of Switzerland" selection.

The museum is sited near Cantine di Gandria, directly across the Lake Lugano from the village of Gandria, and adjacent to the border with Italy. The museum was formerly a border post on that border, but now forms part of the Swiss National Museum.
