The Iberian settlement of Montbarbat is located on the summit of the mountain of the same name, 331 metres above sea level, on the Serralada Litoral, at the north-western end of the municipality of Lloret de Mar, on the border with Maçanet de la Selva. Its location makes it a strategic place, as it is a watchtower that visually dominates the entire depression of La Selva, the slopes of the mountains that surround it, the western part of the Gavarres and the entire lower Tordera. Therefore, two of the most important communication routes in the country were controlled from Montbarbat. One was the Via Heraclea, which connected the Iberian Peninsula with the rest of Europe. The other was the maritime-river route that connected the coast with the interior of the country along the axis of the Tordera-riera d'Arbúcies.
