The castle of Piagnaro is a defensive structure located on the hill that dominates, in a northerly direction, the village of Pontremoli, in the province of Massa and Carrara. The castle was an integral part of the defensive system of the city together with the walls and towers that defended the medieval village, developed along the Via Francigena. Built at the beginning of the eleventh century, it has undergone numerous reconstructions over the centuries, especially in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Today, a portion of the castle houses the Museum of Lunigiana stele statues and is part of the Association of Castles of the Duchy of Parma, Piacenza and Pontremoli circuit.
