LVR-Archäologischer Park Xanten

The Xanten Archaeological Park (APX) is an open-air museum near Xanten on the Lower Rhine (North Rhine-Westphalia). The sponsor is the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR), which decided to establish the park in 1973. It was opened in 1977 and has been expanded several times since then.

2. St. Mariä Himmelfahrt

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is a pilgrimage church in Marienbaum near Xanten. It was built as an abbey church of the Birgitten monastery, founded in 1460, and from 1802 it became a parish church in the course of secularization.

3. Fürstenberg

The Fürstenberg, located 71.6 metres above sea level, is a hill southeast of the town of Xanten, which also gave its name to the Fürstenberg monastery that was formerly located there, of which only the "Kreuzkapelle" built in 1671/72 has been preserved to this day. On the site of the old monastery courtyard, the Fürstenberg House was built in 1843. As early as 13/12 BC, the Roman legionary camp Vetera was built on the southern slope of the Fürstenberg. Part of the Fürstenberg, around 47 hectares, is now a nature reserve.

4. Römische Thermen

So far, two thermal baths have been proven in Xanten on the grounds of Colonia Ulpia Traiana: the large public thermal baths in the west of the city on Insula 10 and the hostel baths in the northeast on Insula 38. The researchers consider it not unlikely that there were other private thermal baths, but these have not yet been proven.

The Jewish Cemetery Xanten is a Jewish cemetery in the town of Xanten in the district of Wesel in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The burial ground is located south of Xanten am Heesberg, a few hundred meters south of Gelderner Straße and can be reached via Heeser Weg.

6. Vetera Castra

Vetera was the name of the location of two successive Roman legionary camps in the province of Germania Inferior near present-day Xanten on the Lower Rhine. The legionary camps of Vetera were part of the Lower Germanic Limes and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.

7. Xanten Cathedral

The Catholic parish and former collegiate church of St. Viktor in Xanten on the Lower Rhine is commonly referred to as Xanten Cathedral because of its importance and size, although it was never an episcopal church. The towers are 72 and 74 meters high. In 1937, Pope Pius XI gave the church the title of a basilica minor, and it is also a provost's church today.
