The Muffenheim desert is an abandoned settlement between Ottersdorf and Plittersdorf near Rastatt. The first mention of Muffenheim dates back to the year 790 in the traditions of Lorsch Abbey. The village was probably founded in the 7th century, as row graves from the Merovingian period were found near the desert. It is assumed that the settlement was abandoned before 1510 and that the area was divided between the neighbouring communities of Ottersdorf and Plittersdorf.
