3. Casa da Morte

The House of Death was a clandestine center of torture and murder created by the repressive organs of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985) in a house in the city of Petrópolis, state of Rio de Janeiro. In the house, several captured political prisoners were tortured and murdered by the military during the 70s, a fact that only became known due to the denunciations of a single survivor, the leader of the VAR-Palmares organization Inês Etienne Romeu, who fought against the military dictatorship. She was captive, raped and tortured for more than three months in the residence, before being thrown on a street in the suburbs of Rio almost dead, but surviving to tell the story. The house was provisionally listed by INEPAC in 2023.
