Václav Skalník was a Czech artistic gardener, botanist and superior of Mariánské Lázně. He was born into a family of artistic gardeners. He studied in England, France and Vienna. After his return, he began working on the Hořín chateau for Count Anton Isidor Lobkowicz, but he also participated in the landscaping of the park in Bílina. His work was also known to the abbot of the Teplá monastery, Karel Kašpar Reitenberger, who planned to improve Mariánské Lázně. Therefore, he negotiated with Count Lobkowicz that Skalník would be allowed to participate in the spa modifications.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic deanery church located in the middle of Goethe Square in Mariánské Lázně. The church was built in the Neo-Byzantine style according to the project of the architect Johann Gottfried Gutensohn. The builders were Anton Thurner and Josef Kranner. The main initiator of the construction of the new church in Mariánské Lázně was the abbot of Teplá, Marian Josef Heinl. The foundation stone was laid in 1844 and the church was consecrated in 1848. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
