Established in 1951, Petrozavodsk University Botanical Garden is located on the northeast bank of Petrozavodsk Bay in Onega Lake, covering an area of 367 hectares. It is one of the northernmost introduction sites in Russia, located in the middle coniferous forest sub-belt and one of the northernmost introduction sites in Russia. It is the limit of natural distribution of many woody species, which makes it the link between Arctic Alpine Botanical Garden and St. Petersburg Botanical Garden, and gradually domesticates plants of great significance for forestry, landscape architecture and northern fruit cultivation. In 2009, a total of 1,185 vascular and cultivated plants were included in the collection.
