In an area of Rome, the castellum meinerwijk is a fortress, discovered during archaeological excavations in 1978 and 1991, on the edge of the Rhine River, near Arnhem. The castle near Meinerswijk was probably built by Roman General Germanicus on the south side of the Rhine. This wooden fortress protected Roman shipping, probably a gravel ditch excavated north from the Rhine River. In Roman times, ancient ice flowed south from Doesburg in order to flow into the Rhine River at the castle.
