The 2003 Nasiriyah bombing was a suicide attack on the Italian Carabinieri MSU headquarters in Nasiriyah, Iraq, south of Baghdad on 12 November 2003. The attack resulted in the deaths of 18 Italian servicemembers, mostly members of the MSU Carabinieri, an Italian civilian, and 9 Iraqi civilians and was the worst Italian military disaster since the Second World War. The attack, labeled a "terrorist act" by Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, was among a string of many attacks on non-American military international targets in Iraq that occurred shortly after the end of major combat operations, including the Jordanian and Turkish embassies, International Red Cross, and UN facilities.

The church of San Lorenzo delle Benedettine, a national monument, is one of the most important sacred buildings of San Severo. Rectory and grancia of San Severino, it is also called of San Benedetto. Built on a project by the Neapolitan architect Giuseppe Astarita greatly modified by Ambrosio Piazza (1782), the church, annexed to the monumental monastery of the Benedictine nuns, has a superb rococo façade in Apricena marble, executed by 1789 by the sculptor Pietro Palmieri on a design by Piazza, and elegant bell tower with majolica dome.

The church of Santa Maria della Pietà, a national monument, is a small but important place of Catholic cult of San Severo. It is also called the dead, as it is entrusted in 1707 to the homonymous secular congregation, the oldest among the currently active congregations, also called the nobles, founded in 1580 and canonically erected in 1693.
