1. Festung Rosenberg

Show sight on map

Fort Rosenberg is a castle surrounded by baroque fortifications above the town of Cronach in Upper Franconia. It is one of the best preserved fortresses in Bavaria, and its history can be traced back to the 13th century. Along with Fort Fokkheim, it was one of two national fortresses of Bishop Bamberg, who over the centuries developed Rosenberg from a medieval fortification into a Renaissance castle and later into a modern fortress complex. Because of its numerous construction stages, the factory is considered as an outstanding example of the development of German defense construction. Including moat and external wall works, the area covered is about 8.5 hectares, and together with the forward earthwork of the northern apron, the fortified terrain once covered 23.6 hectares.
